How Can I Reduce the Risk of Altitude Sickness on Kilimanjaro?
2 November 2026

Walk slowly, drink water, and choose a route with more nights. Those are the three things you control. A 7-day, 8-day, or 9-day itinerary is safer for most people than a 5-day rush. Tell your guide about a headache, nausea, dizziness, or confusion as soon as it starts. Descending is the treatment that matters. Kilita's guides are instructed to take symptoms seriously.

How Kilita plans it

Some travellers discuss altitude medicine with their own doctor before the trip. We do not prescribe it and we do not recommend a dose. Do not hide symptoms to protect a summit photo. A turned-around climb is a successful decision. Read our note on the final night so you know what the summit walk feels like before you are in it.

What to do next

  • Add days rather than walk faster.
  • Report symptoms early.
  • Talk to your doctor about any medicine.
  • Accept a turnaround if the guide calls it.
