Which Kilimanjaro Route Gives First Time Climbers More Time to Acclimatise?
2 November 2026

First-time climbers should look at the 7-day Machame, the 8-day Lemosho, or the 9-day Northern Circuit before the 5-day Marangu or the 6-day Machame. Extra nights are the practical way to give your body time at altitude. Kilita's 8-day Lemosho card is $1,900 joining or $2,250 private. The 7-day Machame card is $1,700 joining or $2,000 private.

How Kilita plans it

No route removes the risk of altitude sickness. A slower schedule only improves the odds. Tell Kilita if you have never slept above 3,000 metres. We would rather add a day than start you on a short itinerary. The climb is not a race, and the extra day is part of the plan, not a luxury.

What to do next

  • Prefer seven days or more for a first climb.
  • Lemosho and the Northern Circuit are the slower options.
  • Say if you have never been at altitude.
  • Do not pick a route only because it is the cheapest.
