Lemosho starts further west and takes longer to join the route that Machame uses higher up. Machame starts at the Machame gate and is the busier classic path. Both are camping routes. Both can finish with the same summit walk. Kilita's 7-day Machame card is $1,700 joining or $2,000 private. The 8-day Lemosho card is $1,900 joining or $2,250 private.
How Kilita plans it
Choose Lemosho if you want the quieter first days and you have the extra day. Choose Machame if you want the well-known route and a slightly shorter trek. Neither is an easy option. The scenery on the first half is the real difference. The cold summit night is not.
What to do next
- Lemosho: longer approach, fewer people at the start.
- Machame: the classic ridge, often busier.
- Both are camping routes.
- Compare 7-day Machame with 8-day Lemosho, not with 5-day Marangu.
