How Many Days Should I Spend on a Northern Tanzania Wildlife Safari?
2 November 2026

Five to seven days is the range that feels complete for a first northern safari. Three days works if you only want the Serengeti and the crater. Four days adds Tarangire. Six or seven days lets you spend two or three nights in the Serengeti instead of driving through it. Kilita's 7-day camping card is $1,500 joining or $1,950 private, and the 7-day midrange lodge card is $1,850 joining or $2,250 private.

How Kilita plans it

Count nights in the parks, not nights in Arusha. A '7-day safari' that starts with two nights in town is a shorter wildlife trip. If your dates are built around the migration, put the extra nights in the Serengeti region where the herds are, and keep Ngorongoro to one or two nights.

What to do next

  • Three days: Serengeti and crater only.
  • Five days: the usual first northern circuit.
  • Seven days: more than one Serengeti area, or a calmer pace.
  • Do not count arrival day in Moshi as a safari day.
