There is no single best month. The herds use the short-grass plains in the south from about January to March, move toward the western corridor around May to July, and spend the dry season in the north, including the Mara River, from about July to October. November and December are the return south. The useful question is which of those scenes you want.
How Kilita plans it
River crossings are not on a timetable. A July or August trip in the north gives you the season when crossings happen. It does not guarantee one on your afternoon. A February trip in Ndutu is about the calving, not a river. Kilita will match the Serengeti nights on your quote to the region that fits your dates. Read the migration guide, then tell us the month you can travel.
What to do next
- January to March: southern plains and calving.
- July to October: northern Serengeti and the Mara River.
- Ask which gate and camp match that month.
- Keep a spare day if a crossing is the goal.
