Kibo Hut Route Overview

For climbers who want the comfort of hut accommodation along with the best possible chance of a successful summit, the 8-day Kibo Hut route is Kilita's most gradual hut-based itinerary. It follows the classic Marangu path through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert, but builds in two dedicated acclimatization days rather than the usual one.
After the standard rest day at Horombo Hut, climbers spend an additional night resting at Kibo Hut itself, at around 4,700m, directly below the summit. That extra night at altitude, immediately before the midnight summit push, is the key difference from Kilita's shorter Marangu itineraries, and it meaningfully reduces the physical strain of summit night for climbers who prefer a gentler pace.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,720m)

After breakfast and a briefing, you're driven around 45 minutes to the Marangu Gate for park registration. The trail climbs gently through montane rainforest, home to blue monkeys and colorful turacos, to Mandara Hut, where the group's first night is spent in simple, shared mountain huts rather than tents.

  • 1,860m to 2,720m | 8 km | 4-5 hours | Montane forest
  • Overnight: Mandara Hut
  • Meals: Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 2 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

The forest gives way to open moorland as the trail climbs steadily toward Horombo Hut, with striking views of Mawenzi Peak and, on clear days, Kibo's summit ahead. Giant lobelias and groundsels dot the landscape, and most climbers start to notice the thinner air by the end of the day.

  • 2,720m to 3,720m | 11 km | 6-7 hours | Moorland
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 3 Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

The first of two dedicated rest days on this extended itinerary. After a relaxed breakfast, an optional short hike toward the Zebra Rocks helps the body adjust to the altitude without over-exerting. The rest of the day is free to relax at Horombo Hut and prepare for the higher camps ahead.

  • Distance covered: 5 km | Approx. 3-4 hours
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 4 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

The trail crosses the last watering point before climbing onto the exposed "saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, where the vegetation disappears into stark alpine desert. Kibo Hut, a stone hut just below the crater rim, is reached by mid-afternoon, leaving plenty of time to rest before an early dinner.

  • 3,720m to 4,700m | 10 km | 5-6 hours | Alpine desert
  • Overnight: Kibo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 5 Rest Day at Kibo Hut

This is the key difference of the 8-day itinerary: rather than pushing straight to the summit the night after arriving at Kibo Hut, the group spends a full extra day resting at 4,700m. Guides keep an eye on everyone's condition, a short acclimatization walk is optional, and an early night follows dinner to prepare for the midnight summit start.

  • Overnight: Kibo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 6 Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak then Horombo Hut

Climbing begins around midnight on steep scree toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continues along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, timed for sunrise. After time at the summit, the group descends back through Kibo Hut for a break before continuing down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

  • 4,700m to 5,895m ascent, then down to 3,720m | 6 km up / 20 km down | 11-15 hours total | Summit zone and alpine desert
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 7 Horombo Hut to Mandara Hut

With the summit behind you, the descent is split into two gentler days rather than one long push. The trail retraces the moorland route back down to Mandara Hut, giving tired legs an easier pace and more time to enjoy the forest and views on the way down.

  • 3,720m to 2,720m | 11 km | 5-6 hours | Moorland and montane forest
  • Overnight: Mandara Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.

Day 8 Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate and transfer to Moshi

A final, easy walk through rainforest brings the group down to Marangu Gate, where park formalities are completed and summit certificates are issued. It's customary to tip the guides, cooks, and porters here before the short drive back to your hotel in Moshi.

  • 2,720m to 1,860m | 8 km | 3-4 hours | Montane forest
  • Meals: Breakfast and Lunch Included.
