Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania at the base of the Great Rift Valley, is a diverse and picturesque safari destination known for its striking landscapes and abundant wildlife. The park covers approximately 330 km² (127 sq miles) and features the shallow alkaline Lake Manyara, which attracts large flocks of flamingos and other waterbirds during the wet season. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, hippos, giraffes, buffaloes, and a variety of antelopes, making it ideal for both wildlife spotting and photography. The park’s scenery is remarkably varied, with dense groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and swamps surrounding the lake. This variety of habitats supports over 400 bird species, making it a top destination for birdwatchers. Lake Manyara is best visited during the dry season from June to October, when animals gather around water sources, but it remains beautiful and vibrant throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy half-day or full-day game drives, while lodges and tented camps within the park allow for extended stays. Located about 125 km (78 miles) from Arusha, Lake Manyara is conveniently combined with safaris to Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and the Serengeti for multi-day itineraries.
