Tanzania is a vibrant, safe, and breathtakingly beautiful East African country. Whether you are arriving for a trek, a safari, or a tropical beach stay, knowing the basics of local life, money, and transport ensures a smooth arrival.

Welcome to Tanzania! This guide covers the essential logistics to help first-time international visitors travel confidently.

1. Currency and Banking

Tanzania's official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). However, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted for safaris, park entry fees, and high-end hotels.

  • USD Dollar Bills: US Dollar bills printed before 2013 are NOT accepted in East Africa due to past counterfeiting issues. Ensure your bills are crisp, clean, and printed after 2013.
  • ATMs and Cards: ATMs are common in major towns like Arusha, Moshi, and Zanzibar. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at major resorts but carry a 3% to 5% processing fee.

2. Vaccines and Health Requirements

  • Yellow Fever: A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if you are entering Tanzania from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission (including transits longer than 12 hours).
  • Malaria: Malaria is endemic in most parts of Tanzania. Consult your travel clinic regarding malaria prophylactics (like Atovaquone/Proguanil or Doxycycline) and use high-strength bug sprays.

3. Language and Culture

Swahili is the national language of Tanzania, but English is widely spoken in the tourism industry, hotels, and restaurants. Learning a few Swahili words will show respect and bring smiles:

  • Jambo: Hello.
  • Asante Sana: Thank you very much.
  • Karibu: Welcome.
  • Hakuna Matata: No worries.
