Climbing Kilimanjaro takes you through five distinct ecological zones, from hot tropical forests to freezing arctic summits (-15°C). Having the correct technical layering system is essential to stay warm, dry, and reach Uhuru Peak.
Your main luggage will be carried by our local Tanzanian porters in waterproof duffel bags. You will carry a lightweight daypack with your daily essentials.
1. Technical Clothing (The Layering System)
- Base Layer: 2-3 sets of moisture-wicking polyester or merino wool thermal underwear (never cotton!).
- Mid Layer: 1-2 breathable fleece jackets or active sweaters.
- Outer Layer: 1 windproof, waterproof shell jacket (Gore-Tex) and matching rain pants.
- Insulated Jacket: A high-quality heavy down jacket with a hood, crucial for the freezing summit night push.
2. Footwear and Handwear
- Hiking Boots: High-cut, waterproof leather or synthetic boots, fully broken-in before your trip to prevent blisters.
- Socks: 4-5 pairs of heavy wool trekking socks, plus thin liner socks.
- Gloves: Thin glove liners, paired with heavy, windproof insulated ski-style mittens.
3. Sleeping and Camping Gear
- Sleeping Bag: A warm, four-season down sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C or -15°C.
- Trekking Poles: Essential for reducing impact on your knees during the steep descent.
- Headlamp: Vital for summit night, complete with extra batteries (which drain rapidly in freezing temperatures).
